Metformin, Milk Thistle Or NAC: What Protects Your Liver With Type 2 Diabetes?
Share
If you have type 2 diabetes and want to protect your liver, you'll run into three names: metformin, milk thistle and NAC. They do different jobs.
Metformin
It lowers your blood sugar. Keep taking it exactly as prescribed. But it isn't a liver treatment: US liver guidelines don't use it to treat fatty liver, and it doesn't rebuild glutathione.
Milk thistle
The most studied liver herb there is. It helps protect liver cells, which is real. But it contains no NAC and no glutathione, so it doesn't rebuild what type 2 diabetes drains.
NAC
Your liver protects itself with glutathione, and type 2 diabetes drains it. In a 2011 Diabetes Care study, people with uncontrolled type 2 were severely short of it. Given its building blocks (cysteine, which NAC supplies, plus glycine), their glutathione production was back up within two weeks.
Why this matters
7 in 10 people with type 2 already have a fatty liver and 1 in 5 already have scarring, and type 2 diabetes roughly doubles the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer.
